Game design work

On this page I have made a selection of my most favorite projects:

Electronic Arts Madrid

I worked as an intern at EA Games Madrid as a linguistic tester. I really enjoyed working there and I think EA is an amazing company. I worked on The Sims 3 Store content, FIFA 10 on Xbox360 and also SPORE Hero for the Wii. My internship ended after four months at November 2009 and I returned to my university in Holland.

My projects during my internship at EA Games Madrid:

FIFA 10 and SPORE Hero

The Sims 3 Store (content)

School projects:

Will o' Wisp

Since last February I am working on the game "Will o' Wisp". Will o' Wisp is an entertainment game that I am making for a school project together with four other students of The Utrecht School of the Arts and three students of the Technical University of Delft. I am the teamcaptain and I also have the lead of the Usability tests. I try to organize a lot of tests with the actual target audience so that we design what they want, instead of what we think will be fun. Next to the usability tests I also try to help out with the 3D modelling. The first animation trailer of our game can be found below at the youtube video. The game will be released in the end of May 2009 and more information about the game itself will be added soon.

Déteste L'amour

Déteste l'amour is an arcade game build by me and my team in just one week. It was an interesting school project between the Utrecht School of Arts and The Technical University of Delft. Our team was divided in 5 game designers and 3 programmers. I had the role of group leader and made sure all the communication between the designers and programmers went fine. To do this I made sure all the design decisions were written down in a way it was easy to understand for the programmers. I also helped design the game mechanics.

In Déteste l'armour the player helps a little devil to ruin Valentine's day. Little cupid is spreading his love by throwing down loveable gifts while the players needs to climb up in a rose and collect thorns. Whenever the player is hit with one of Cupid's gifts he will be slowed down and his score will go down. These gifts can vary between chocolate boxes, love arrows, little hearts, and flowers.

The player can score by collecting as much thorns as possible and staying alive. If the player wins after 60 secondes, the little devil will pin the thorns upon Cupid's love arrows so all his targets will be hurt. The player can lose by climbing too slow which will cause the devil to drop of the screen. A highscore will be displayed and it is possible to replay the game to get an even higher score!

Snatch: The Urban Game in Utrecht

This year I worked on an Urban Game by order of the Dutch Game Gardens and the NLGD. Me and my team designed the game named SNATCH. The maingoal of this game was to capture the enemies colored markings and capture beacons. These beacons where set in the City of Utrecht and which team controlled the most beacons after 30 mins wins the game.

Favorite project during my first year of Game Design: The Drugslab

My first visible designed and constructed project was called the Drugslab and was created for a festival named Defqon. Me and other designers got the task to design a 'village' on a festival terrain during the summer of 2008. We could design everything we wanted with a particular budget and with a few safety restrictions.

So I designed a 'drugs'bar as shown on the pictures below where people could take pictures and tap their own lemonade. I filled my frame with colored water bottles so when the sun shined on top of them they would give a great colorful reflection on the sand.

My inspiration came from boiling laboratories from mad scientists just like in the movies. I build the frame myself without any help of professional builders which was great opportunity to learn to do things yourself even if you got no idea how. I did receive help from two girls from school to build the frame but it stayed my design and I was in lead.

This year’s project: Character Design

This year we started a course named character design. We had the assignment to first create a story about two characters with a special connection together with a classmate. You had to write a little story about those two characters which showed what their dreamsare, where they came from, and what is their obstacle to reach their dreams. My character is a clumsy little girl named Noortje Bibber who wants to be a superhero.

After you wrote down a profile including a background story for your character, you had to start to draw them so later you could 3dmodel him/her and later this year even animate.

I first drew her as on the pictures below but she evolved after a first set of drawings.

The next step was to model our character in 3Dsmax and make sure it is able to be animated later on this year. The animations can be seen at the Youtube movies below.

My favorite projects during high school: Theatre and Writing

During high school I have been very active with acting and followed one acting course after another. My acting reached his peak when I got to perform in a junior production of Scenes of a Marriage by Ingmar Bergman. This was a production from the Theatre Group of Amsterdam and was performed in the main theater of Amsterdam.

I also participated in the competition of BBC's Young Writers Awards with my essay named 'Live life as in a high school canteen'.
